Reflection

Process of creating this blog makes me realise that there are multiple factors that can contribute to media and publishing issue. With all the research, readings and analysing on related current issue of publishing, I understand the fundamental rule of a blogger such as professional code of ethics and morality have to be practice when expressing my opinion in any multimedia. In addition to that, quotes, content and images that are took from other authors and sources are cited using Harvard referencing method and footnote to avoid copyright, defamation and infrindgement issues. After all, opinion and back up information have to be accurate, informative, and up-to-date for a constructive website (Lannon 2006, p.468).

As it could be seen, there are multiple varieties of multimodal modes in the blog. According to Walsh (2006, p.30-31), the multimodal modes in a document will help in conveying the message across to the reader in a stronger way. For example, text, images, video and hyperlinks are the multimodal modes used.

According to Schriver (1997), in order to deliver the message effectively, both text and images have to be present. Thus, texts and images are added into the blog for readers to strengthen their understanding and ease their reading. As supported by Oakley (2005, p.229), written and unwritten material in a text have to be combine in delivering the meaning for analysis to be conducted.

For document designer, there will be a few aspects such as freedom of speech, creativity and ethics that have to be taken into consideration based on the blogosphere surrounding you.

Freedom of Speech, Are We Ready Yet ?

Recently, there is a case where a blogger actually insulted the late Sultan of Johor in his blog. By doing so, it had causes displease among the public and strict action are demanded to be taken on him. Although a formal apology is made, it was unacceptable to the public opinion. Relevant authority had conducted an investigation on this issue to investigate if any form of defaming or violation of the regulations is found. Even so, the blogger have actually mistreated the purpose of blogging and uses the multimedia for the wrong act (Shadiqe 2010).

In blogging community, blogs do not exist as a place where bloggers can say whatever they want or basically anything. If a blogger decided to post on issue that are sensitive towards the public, the person have to take up the responsibility towards the cost that there will be people that disagree to it or even in the eyes of the law.

According to VanFossen (2007), bloggers can post and share their opinion or view towards an issue if and only if the country law, internet provider, web host, publics and etc that actually have power over the blogosphere surrounding us approve it.

According to TheStarOnline (2008), In Malaysia, freedom of speech is always a critical issue, even thought the society wants to be in a country where by what they wrote or said is allowed, it could be seen that we are not ready for it yet. Although we are given the freedom to speech in some extend, vital aspects that should not be neglected when expressing it to the public are things such as the morality, value, approach and sensitive issue that could affect the harmony of the country. When expressing an opinion, make sure that it was implied using a proper manners and with respect to the readers without being found offensive.

Bloggers will have to learn to use the freedom of speech in a proper manner and not corrupt it using the multimedia. After all, rules and regulations exist to act as a guide for the blogger in the blogosphere but not for the sake of controlling.

The New Era Of Magazine Publishing

Traditional print magazine that are focus on hand-on skills have learn to change with the improvement of technology and have enter the digital form and created the electronic magazine. Electronic magazine have a more variety of skills that can be developed into it such as video, audio, slideshow and published the text format in a more effective ways. It provides the reader with a firsthand virtual experience, up-to-date information and easy access via iPad. However they are no specific platform to create the electronic magazine for the publisher and designer (Sivek 2010).

Magazine has always been a publishing genre where it will keep information that are interesting and catch the eyes of us, the reader. In my aspects, there will be a few factors that will contribute in linking both the reader and the magazine such as the truthfulness, the own characteristics of the magazine if compared to the rest of the publishing, special feel that it produce to the readers and the easy availability of the stock. Moreover, these elements are important not only for printed based but to electronic format as well.

In electronic magazine (Ezine), there are a few details that could only be done electronic wise but could not be reach using the printed based. Ezine actually used more variety of ways to interact with the reader and sending the message across in a more efficient manner. According to Kress and Leeuwen (2006, p.201), when composing images, multiple extent of salience are present in the parts and arranged the information based on the degree of importance, the significance level in grabbing the attention compared to other parts and directly created a hierarchy. In my opinion, issue that are directly link or engaged to the reader will have a higher salient. For example, in Ezine such as E-Mags, readers are capable to get the hands-on experience on the issue with video, audio and also slideshow that are available which will not be found in printed based magazine.

According to Oakley (2005, p.299), for interpretation to take place, both the written and unwritten material in a genre should be made available in order for the message to be deliver more efficiently. With the variety of moving images and web application used in Ezine, it will interact in a different ways compared to only text-driven approaches that can be usually found in printed based magazine. As supported by Walsh (2006, p.26), nowadays written text is no longer the major part in interpreting a message. For example, it can be seen in Gourmet Live(S), application such as HTML5 and demo video. Next, it also allowed their readers to share the content of in the social networking sites, the information are updated frequently, consists of more images and varieties of cues from graphics are being used.

Thus, variety of salience in will enhance the reader experience in publishing, and it could be seen in electronic magazine. According to Morrish (1996), electronic magazine are popular with their accuracy in the content, entertaining of the application present in it and aggravation. Designers have to be aware that readers does not relied solely on the content but on the reliability, economy(less investment) and convenient (easy available).

How Safe Is Facebook?

Lately, US newspaper, The Wall Street Journal founds out that Facebook the most popular networking sites that contains 500 million users have been violating the privacy policy. It was found that application in Facebook was providing users’ information to the third parties without their knowledge (ABC news 2010).

As a youngster, Facebook had been one of the social networks that I’m currently addicted to. Despite all the critics on Facebook regarding their privacy policy issue. Even so, I had prepared the fact that my personal information will be leak out to the marketers, advertisers or databases collector when I agreed to sign up for it. Furthermore, Facebook is a social networking site and by posting our information online, we should have prepared for the consequences.

According to Steel and Fowler (2010), it is proven that at least 10 popular applications in Facebook are spreading the users’ information to the third parties. The information is usually collected by outsider for advertising and selling the user information to database company. In addition, the user activities in the internet can be track easily.

According to Bodoni (2010), Facebook are under inspection by European Union for it’s complaining by user on the privacy rule breaches regarding the personal data issue. With the personal data protection regulations, users can access, change or block their information and this will act as a protection to the privacy of the users. This is because, with the technology, there are many new methods for outsiders to retrieve the data in an undetectable manner.

Furthermore, there is a company known as Beacon advertising service that actually function by providing user’s information to Facebook for third parties usage. Problem arises when the information was still being transmitted to Beacon after users have discard and deleted the application. Next, user activities such as purchasing, posting and evaluation from outsource website for example Fandango.com will be collected by Beacon. Privacy has been breach when Beacon was only created to track the user’s activities for the advertiser but not sharing their private information. It had lead to lose of faith in user and created propaganda with an amount of 50,000 users. As stated by Tricia Bushnell a 7 years users of facebook, “We know we don’t have a right to privacy, but there still should be a certain morality here, a certain level of what is private in our lives” (Story & Stone 2007)”.

Facebook in my opinion are responsible of the user information and they have to avoid the data to be demoralized by the third parties.

The Impact of Electronic Book (E-Book)

Publishers and readers are found to be displeased about traditional book to be published in digital format. However, similar to the music and movie case, the publisher will not stand long in the industry by just selling and releasing traditional book. From prediction, digital format books will take an average of 50 per cent in the sales of books around year 2020 and will increase in upcoming years (Cornwall 2010).

Electronic book also known as E-book in short. The question that always arises when issue related to e-book is that will it actually take over the world of publishing industry and how will the digital products such as laptop and hand held devices such as PDA or pocket PC affect the book publishing industry and their distribution channel.

E-book is penetrating to the society with the richness of information technology and also the internet. According to Hillesund (2001), the growth of e-book is foreseen many years ago and with the increase of networking system in the community, information can be stream and downloaded since content are available in digital format. For example, online publishing had been going on for quite some time for newspapers (THE STAR ONLINE, NEW STRAITS TIME) and magazines as well. Now is just the time where the books in written format and printed have been digitalised. Examples of E-book are the Gemstar Rocket E-book (http://www.ebookmall.com/gemstar-device/) and Bookeen Cybook (http://ereaderguide.info/bookeen_cybook_ebook_reader_review.htm).

The invention of E-book will affect the publisher as well as readers. With the digital publishing on the move now, publishing industry has been trying to change some element of their printing such as the design, typography and also the images to fits the requirement. Due to that, some elements of printed publishing will vanish. Furthermore, with the present of E-books, book sellers will have lesser printed books to sell in the industry and with the competition of printed books that was is difficult, it will cause some of the book to be unable to compete in the demanding market. With the information on books to be published online, it would be difficult for any bookshop, bookseller or author to survive with only printed book.

It will be difficult for publisher to cope with the competition and changes of the digital format of publishing from the printed and the production, sales and marketing of the new format. Thus, publishers will take option to create alliances or joint venture to survive in the network industry. In addition to that, even though there will be boundary such as language, political, rules and regulations, and culture when books are published globally through internet, publisher had already create alliances in the multi country.

According to Warburton (2007), the growth of e-book can be seen as a cost-saving and capable of providing an accurate content which are up-to date. Printed book information stay put throughout the time once is printed compared to digital format where the information can be adjusted according to date. Next, printed book cannot be change the segments of the books and even change their design. As compared to electronic book where it can be retrieve when ever or where ever the readers need it via the host of E-book.

New forms of media publishing

There are a few new form of media publishing such as twitter, you tube, facebook and etc. Each media publishing have different application, usage and method of using it. Reader do not solely depends on 1 media tools to seek for the information that they need compared to many years back. Newspaper are not just the only media publishing tools present now, thus reader will have more choices in seeking for the information such as via video streaming on youtube, online journal and etc.

Issues concerning of new trends:-

According to Loewenstein (2008), some countries see media publishing as place where people express their opinion on specific issue while some even banned media publishing due to reason such as corruption or threat. Freedom of speech is different based on different cultural background, political issue, and country regimes and rules & regulations.

Take country such as China as an example, they took media publishing as a place to express their concern on some issues that involved the society benefits rather than using it to critised on political issue. However, for country like Cuba, media publishing are strictly monitored and disallowed any form of corruption or misleading thought.

Even so, there is other countries that do not see media publishing as a threat nor place to express their concern but solely just to enhance their knowledge and country development.

Every media publishing tools have a set of policy to be follow to protect the rights of the reader and writer. For example, Facebook disallowed any posting in the form of violence, sexual, offensive and etc as it have to protect the readers and maintaining reputation as a  healthy social networking tools. Still so, Facebook are banned from China as restrictions vary in different matters. It was restricted as China finds Facebook a media that could spread and exposed unhealthy issues.

Types of blogging communities & methods to build blogging communities. The structure of one blogging community, Blog Catalog.

According to Nikki (2008), blogs that are created do not just focus on building and creating attention of the reader community to your blog. A success of a blog can be achieved with a blogging community. In blogging community, blogger are creating an image for themselves through what they have already posted, besides from letting the world know more about themselves and also the subject matter. Blogs as current phenomenon & benefits to the community

According to Technorati.com (2009), the blogosphere size had increased rapidly since year 2004. It is proven that there is more blogger in 2009 compared to 2008.

There are different categories of blogger such as in the year 2009 report:
  1. Professional blogger: 28%
  2. Hobbyist blogger: 72%
Out of the above blogger, 9% are self employed blogger while 17% blog as a primary source of their income.
However, the blogging activities in 2009 had decreased due to the arisen of twitter, microblogging activities and other social media application.

Europe: According to Suarez (2010), there are approximately 15-20million blogs in Europe with the top European blog to be focusing on subject matter such as politics and technology. In the Europe, there is higher amount of man(70%) blogging compared to the women(30%). Therefore, there is a higher popularity in subject such as technology compared to gossip and celebrities (17%) and personal (12%).

Asia: According to Asia New Zealand Foundation (2010), there are approximately 40millions blogs in one of the country in Asia, which is China. The reason behind the high amount of blogger in China was that the government intervention on controlling the news and media content in the country. Media tools such as blog, twitter, you tube and etc are used to emphasize on the benefits of Internet rather than being control by the government.

Malaysia: According to Sabahan.com (2007), the highest percentage of blogger subject in Malaysia is on personal (28%) and are follow by politics and technology each holding 16%. Top blogs in Malaysia are usually kennysia.com, yasmin the story teller, liewCF.com, lim kit siang and etc. Blogs such as those could top the list either because the blog is written by high influence people in the country, new technology based, or simply just inspiring enough for others to get attracted on reading it.

Although blogging is a social media tools, there is prevalent in some issue in Malaysia. Freedom of speech is usually questioned and therefore it is difficult to voice out an opinion publicly. In Malaysia, sensitive issue that involved politics, sexuality, racism, discrimination or any content that could be found inappropriate will be restricted.

With those prevalent blogs, political blogs will not be found offensive and creating a split among the nation. It is very important that the community is aware of their responsibility to the country as one nation. This way, discrimination among the different races in Malaysia will not be present. After all, blogs are a social media tools that could spread thoughts and opinion, therefore it is very important that blogger will be watchful of their own words usage and their responsibility in creating a better social environment in the country and also to the public that are reading it.

“ What is good powerpoint presentation? ”

What is a good presentation slide? What is the purpose of the slide? Have you ever recall the moment of attending a speech and endure yourself to stay focus throughout the session? Therefore, a good presentation slide will not only aid you in your presentation, it act as a source that keep things interesting for the reader as well.

Slide Layout
Based on the PowerPoint Presentation, the slide layout could be make a few changes. For example, the phrases should be located from left to right instead of placing it at the center. Make sure there is a title at the top to make it easy for reader to follow (Russell 2010). However, like the below slide, the important points should be place at the top as it will be difficult for audience at the back to read it if the point is located at the bottom instead .

Avoid Fancy Fonts
According to Russell (2010), fonts should be in a bigger size of at least 24pt to 30pt to make it easier for reader at the back (figure below: 20pt). We could even use 2 different kinds of fonts, one on heading and the next one on contents.
Preferably: Times New Roman, Arial & Verdana (max. 2)

Contrasting Color For Text & Background
Besides that, according to Marquez (2010), we should simply avoid using white background to avoid bright color that probably will cause reader to have a headache in the end and toning it down to lighter color. However, preferably on lighter background with black text rather than dark background with light text. Do keep in mind that pattern or textured could make the contents in the slide hard to be readable by the audience. As well as, use a consistent color scheme throughout the slide presentation.

Graphics & Charts
In order to keep things interesting for reader, images, charts, smart art and shapes could be added. In addition, it will help you in explaining the issue better. Graphics or charts could grab the attention of the audience and could create a more exciting atmosphere in the presentation (Marquez 2010).

On top of that, presenter must make sure that the format used can be supported by the computer and are able to operate at any other computer. Try to avoid using too many slides, cut down unnecessary words (straight to the point) so that the audience can read it in a glance and using visual aid to help you in the presentation.  The limitation of the slides is to avoid drawn out and continuity of changing the slides that could create a distraction for the audience and keeping the presentation as interesting as possible (Banks 2010).

Above sample is created for the purpose of understanding the issue of publication and design on dynamics in document design. This post is to share the improvement that have to make on the slides and I hope that the above information will be useful to you as future references on good PowerPoint presentation.

Weblog Overview

Each blog contains different information on a specific topic or issue. This blog is generally created to discuss and comment on the issues related to publication and design. We will share professionalism view on the current issue on publishing and commentaries are highly appreciated.

From my understanding, publication and design aren't about the decoration or the color of the design; it was basically focusing on the message that needed to be sending across to the public, the language used as well as the level of understanding on different cultural background of the reader. Importance of this could be seen when the language used could interpret different form and meaning, context & content. With this knowledge, it will lead to a more effective communication.

The target audience of these issues that will be discussed is on active public & stakeholders. This is due to the fact that only people will read and maintain reading if the issue involved are beneficial, and able to help them in making a decision to providing an advantage to them. In simple, targeted audiences could be student from related field such as journalism, communication or even business, to lecturer, industrial critics, publisher and etc.
